The Target Market Sales Agent

By Violet Rainwater

The Target Market Sales Agent

Early in my career, back in ’98, before a big meeting, I did my homework the only way I could.

There was no LinkedIn. No pulling up a website. No email to speak of.

Research meant one of three things. What I’d learned from my own experience. Asking the seasoned reps who’d been around longer than me. Or reading through whatever brochures I could get my hands on.

Then I’d walk in and hope I’d read the room right.

Sometimes I nailed it. Plenty of times I didn’t. I’d be halfway through a conversation and realize I was talking about the wrong thing to the wrong person about a problem they didn’t actually have.

That wasn’t a talent problem. I went on to become a nine-time MDRT qualifier. I could sell.

It was an information problem. I was walking into rooms half-blind, and I was doing it on volume and hope.

The game has changed. And the salesperson who knows the room before they walk in now wins the room. Every time.

The Room You Never Studied

Here is the step almost everyone skips.

Real target market intelligence. Not “I looked them up.” Actual, deep understanding of who you are selling to, what keeps them up at night, what language they use, what they’ve already tried, and what they actually need to hear.

It gets skipped for one reason. It was always the most time-consuming part of the job. So people did a light version of it, or they skipped it entirely and led with a pitch.

And here’s the quiet truth underneath that. Most salespeople were never taught to build a real picture of who they’re selling to. They were taught to dial. To get through the list. To treat everyone the same and let the numbers sort it out.

That was the whole strategy. More names, more calls, more hope.

This is the exact part of the sales system I obsess over inside The Rainmaker’s Way. Because when you actually understand your market, everything downstream gets easier. The outreach lands. The call flows. The follow-up makes sense. You stop guessing.

What It Is Costing You

The cost of skipping this is not small, and now we can measure it.

Gartner research found that sales reps spend 27.3% of their time working with inaccurate contact and account data. That is roughly 546 hours a year, per rep, spent researching the wrong things and chasing information that leads nowhere. Almost fourteen weeks of the year, gone.

And it shows up in results. LinkedIn’s State of Sales research found that 82% of top-performing salespeople say they always research a prospect before reaching out. Among everyone else, that number drops to 49%.

Read that again. The single clearest line between the top performers and everyone else is not charisma. It is whether they did the work to understand who they were talking to before they opened their mouth.

Here is the one that should get your attention most. Gartner predicts that by 2027, 95% of seller research will begin with AI. In 2024, it was under 20%.

That is not a slow shift. That is the ground moving under your feet. The salespeople who learn to build real target market intelligence with AI are about to leave everyone still doing it the old way very far behind.

The Rainmaker Reframe

So here is what I do instead. And it is the thing I am most proud of building.

For every client whose sales I am driving, I build them their own Target Market Sales Agent.

Not a generic research tool. A custom AI sales agent that lives and breathes one specific target market. It knows the ideal client. It knows the pain points, the objections, the language that market actually responds to, the outcomes they care about. It knows their world.

Think about what that means. Instead of a rep spending two hours digging before a call and still walking in half-blind, they open the Target Market Sales Agent and it hands them the room. Who this buyer is. What they are worried about. The angle that will actually land.

1987 called and wants its “just wing it and be charming” sales strategy back. That era is over. The salesperson with a Target Market Sales Agent in their corner is playing a completely different game than the one still working off a list of names and numbers.

This is the one-two punch I teach. The human brings the presence, the connection, the read on the room in real time. The AI brings the intelligence that used to take fourteen weeks a year to gather. Neither one replaces the other. Together, they are unstoppable.

How I Build It

Before I ever open a platform, I get clear on the target market itself.

I define exactly who we are selling to. Not “small businesses.” The real, specific picture. The role, the industry, the size, the moment in their business when they need what my client sells.

Then I build the agent around that picture. I feed it the deep research on that target market. What they struggle with. What they have already tried and why it did not work. The words they use for their own problems, because that is the language that makes a buyer feel understood.

From there, the agent becomes the client’s starting point for everything. Outreach gets built on top of it. Call prep pulls from it. The whole sales motion starts from a place of actually knowing the room, instead of guessing at it.

And the best part. Once it is built, it does not forget. It does not have an off day. Every rep on the team walks into every room with the same deep understanding my top-producer years took me a decade to develop by hand.

The Bigger Picture

The sales game has forever changed. AI is not going to replace you. But the salesperson who uses AI to truly understand their buyer absolutely will.

For 25 years I built target market intelligence the hard way, one painful meeting at a time. Now I build it into an agent in an afternoon, and I hand my clients a level of understanding that used to separate the top 1% from everyone else.

That is not a shiny object. That is a competitive advantage.

This is the first of four sales agents I am walking through in this series. Next issue, I will show you the one I reach for the second I actually need to reach out.

If you lead a sales team and you’re ready to equip them with one of the most critical skill sets in sales today, building AI sales agents that give them their time back, let’s talk.
